Theology: Ordination is the Sacrament of Holy Orders. It incorporates the ordained into an established spiritual hierarchy (bishops, priests, and deacons). Catholics believe ordination imparts a permanent spiritual "character" on the soul, empowering the priest to act in persona Christi (in the person of Christ), particularly in the offering of the Mass and the forgiveness of sins.

Theology: Baptists hold strongly to the priesthood of all believers and the autonomy of the local church. Ordination does not create a spiritually elevated class of clergy. Instead, it is an act of the local congregation publicly setting apart and blessing a believer who they believe God has called to lead and teach.

Baptists share Protestant texts but focus heavily on verses supporting local church autonomy and congregational governance.
